Lily Grace
Our very first standard poodle was Lily, a beautiful cream and apricot. We got her from a breeder who advertised in our local paper. We went to see the litter, picked her out from the other females, left a deposit and picked her up two weeks later. She was such a sweet smart girl, never met a stranger and loved everyone in our family. Lily got sick at Christmas time when she was just 1 1/2 years old. The diagnosis was Addison's Disease. Her treatment was injections every 24 days, and daily prednisone. She did very well for the first year after her diagnosis. The prednisone made her very thirsty and hungry. Her appetite lead her to eat things that just weren't meant for a dog to eat. Stuffed animals, articles of clothing, gardening gloves, you name it, became part of her diet.
One day she must have eaten something that was not coming back out, she developed an obstruction in her stomach. Surgery was not an option because of the Addison's, her body would not have been able to handle the stress. We lost our Lily Grace at only 3 years old.
So from now on, in her memory, all our standard poodle girls will be named after a flower.
Heartbroken, we set out to research breeders who would do the testing to keep things like Addison's, hip displasia, blindness, skin problems, etc., out of their bloodlines. These are inherited problems, and if the parents don't have it, it is unlikely the puppies will! There are alot of "backyard" breeders out there that don't do any testing on their parent dogs. Please do your research when looking for a standard poodle, there is so much information out there to keep you from unknowingly making a mistake that might lead to heartbreak later.
There is no 100% guarantee, if anyone tells you this, look for a different breeder.
Some breeders will offer you a replacement puppy guarantee, and in the fine print, you have to surrender your original puppy in order to get another. This is so unfair, because really, would you give up the dog you have come to love!
There are websites, such as www.poodlehealthregistry.com out there to research pedigrees on standard poodles. Diseases are listed on affected parents so you can learn alot before you decide on a breeder. Ask questions, get references! You might pay alot for a puppy, but you will have the peace of mind that the breeder you choose has done everything he/she can do to try to prevent negative results! Happy researching! And if I can help, please feel free to contact me!
